Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
