Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
