Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
